The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its dose of heartbreaking and shocking scenes, and its most horrifying one only lasts 10 seconds. Although the MCU isn’t exactly a universe aimed at a young audience, it has mostly kept a family-friendly tone. This was key to its early success, and as the MCU continues to expand, it also pushes its own boundaries more and more. The MCU has become less strict with its language and has addressed darker themes in both its movies and TV shows, and it has brought some truly shocking scenes as well.

Although movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame had some of the MCU’s most heartbreaking scenes, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had hints of horror, and the TV series WandaVision dealt with serious themes like grief, none of them come close to what Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did in one specific scene. The third Guardians of the Galaxy movie introduced the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), who became one of the cruelest MCU villains, as well as the star of this universe's most terrifying scene.

The High Evolutionary's Face Being Peeled Off & Properly Revealed Is The MCU's Most Horrifying Scene

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 High Evolutionary

The High Evolutionary is a geneticist whose goal was to create the perfect species and build his own utopia. In order to achieve this, he experimented on different creatures, and one of his greatest creations was Rocket Raccoon. When the High Evolutionary was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the skin of his face seemed to be a mask glued to his head, hinting at a gruesome accident in the past. It’s later revealed, through a flashback, that when Rocket Raccoon escaped from the High Evolutionary right after the latter killed Rocket’s friends, he viciously attacked the High Evolutionary and disfigured his face, so he had to use a prosthetic mask.

During the High Evolutionary’s confrontation with the whole Guardians team, Gamora noticed the mask was starting to come off, and she peeled the High Evolutionary’s face off completely. The High Evolutionary’s real face was exposed, showing the shocking results of Rocket’s attack. James Gunn and Marvel delivered a very graphic image of the High Evolutionary’s real face, which has no nose, no lips, one eye has no eyelids, and other gruesome details. This brief scene prompts a visceral reaction, and even though viewers know what’s coming the moment Gamora starts to peel the High Evolutionary’s face off, it’s still quite shocking. Of course, this isn’t a scene that’s suitable for kids, and even for a mature audience, it can be very nightmare-inducing.

The High Evolutionary Is One Of The MCU's Most Disturbing Villains

High Evolutionary could return after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

As mentioned above, the High Evolutionary became one of the MCU’s most hated and disturbing villains, and it’s all due to his horrible actions. On his quest to create his “ideal” society, the High Evolutionary caused a lot of pain and death across the universe by kidnapping different lifeforms and subjecting them to horrible experiments. If that wasn’t enough, the High Evolutionary easily disposed of any failed “experiments” and simply killed them, no matter if he killed one creature or an entire planet. The High Evolutionary knew no limits, and all this is enough to make him one of the scariest MCU villains to date.

The reveal of the High Evolutionary’s real face only added to how disturbing and terrifying he is, as it’s not only how horrible he is as a person, but physically, he’s also quite scary. The High Evolutionary has been confirmed to have survived the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and given his impact on the MCU and his comic book history, this might not be the last time he appears in this universe.
