Star Wars Rebels has perhaps never been as widely popular as it is right now, with the Ahsoka series (which many fans refer to as ‘Rebels Season 5’) carrying on the story established in the animated show. And now, the Star Wars comics are getting in on the fan-craze, and just in time for the series’ 10th anniversary, as Marvel Comics just released eight new variant covers for upcoming Star Wars issues that will feature Rebels characters done in their original animated style.

It could be argued that Star Wars Rebels is effectively Dave Filoni’s ‘A New Hope’, in that it has laid the groundwork for decades’ worth of storytelling within the Star Wars universe. Not only that, but the original characters introduced in Rebels are able to stand on their own without needing to fall back on the originals - like Luke, Leia, Han, or even Darth Vader - in order to stay interesting. Now, those characters are being honored on the 10th anniversary of the show in which they appeared, with Marvel Comics featuring them on the covers of upcoming Star Wars and Star Wars: Darth Vader comic book issues. Those characters are: the Grand Inquisitor, Kanan Jarris and Zeb Orrelios, Ezra Bridger and Chopper, Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Agent Kallus, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and - of course - Ahsoka Tano.

These original variant covers were done by artist Caspar Wijingaard, who perfectly captured not only that look and style, but also the energy and the attitude from each of these iconic characters. In a published interview with StarWars.com, Wijingaard spoke on their excitement for this project, as well as their love of the series their variant covers are honoring. “It was such an honor to be involved in the 10th anniversary for Rebels.” said Wijingaard, “Having recently revisited the adventures of the Spectres in preparation for Ahsoka, this opportunity was perfect timing”. Wijngaard also commented on how prevalent the Rebels series and characters are right now, and how it felt to be a part of it all. “We’ve been absolutely spoiled with Rebels content these last few weeks and I’m glad I could be a part of it in some way”.

The comics that these variant covers will be featured on are Star Wars #42-45 and Star War: Darth Vader #42-45. While the covers are not indicative of what fans can expect from the ongoing titles themselves, it is unarguably awesome that Star Wars Rebels, after 10 years, is still so relevant and impactful across every avenue of Star Wars canon. Characters, plot points, and topics from Rebels is the bedrock on which Ahsoka is built, and will assuredly pave the way for the future of Star Wars from this point forward. And now, over in the comics, Rebels characters will be featured on the covers of the two most popular Star Wars titles being printed.

The artwork of these variant covers is exquisite, as each and every piece pays perfect tribute to the source material while also being a unique take on the characters and the iconic lore surrounding them. Overall, this is a treat for Star Wars fans everywhere, and it’s all in celebration of the most impactful addition to the wider canon since the Original Trilogy, Star Wars Rebels, on its 10th anniversary.
